Winter is when Grande Prairie homes work their electrical systems the hardest — space heaters running, block heaters plugged in, furnace cycling, holiday lights up. It's also when a small electrical problem picks the worst possible week to become a big one. Run this checklist in the fall, while fixing things is still comfortable.
The checklist
- Space heater circuits. One heater per circuit, plugged straight into the wall — never a power bar or extension cord. If running one trips a breaker, that circuit needs attention before you rely on it in January.
- Block heater cords and outdoor outlets. Inspect cords for cracked insulation, and confirm outdoor outlets are GFCI-protected and their covers close properly against snow.
- Smoke and CO detectors. Test them, replace batteries, and check the date on the back — detectors expire after about 10 years. Winter means sealed windows and running furnaces; this is the season CO risk peaks.
- Furnace circuit. If your furnace shares a circuit with anything else, or its breaker has ever tripped, get it looked at now — not during a cold snap.
- Warm outlets or switch plates. Walk the house and touch them. Warmth means resistance, and resistance means a connection working loose. That's a call-now item.
- Flickering when the furnace kicks in. Brief dimming can be normal; lights that flicker constantly or dim hard suggest a loose neutral or an overloaded service — worth a professional look.
- Extension cords acting as permanent wiring. If a cord has been feeding something since last winter, that's a circuit that needs to exist properly.
- Holiday lighting load. LEDs draw a fraction of the old strings — if your display trips breakers, it's the circuit, not the season.
- Panel check. Rust, buzzing, warm breakers, or a panel full of double-tapped breakers deserves a professional inspection — especially in older Grande Prairie homes.
- Know your panel. Label the breakers now, before you're finding the right one by flashlight at -35.
